Sep. 24th, 2004 @ 08:57 pm Zoey shed tonite

Tonite.. after her bath.. Zoey finally shed her head completely... now just the tail to go.. her body has yet to change to the milky color..so perhaps she had shed that at the pet store.

She has been a bit grumpy or the past couple days and hasnt pooped in about 4 .. but still eatting her crix... so now that the ordeal is over... Im sure she will go back to her sweet self.

Tomorrow she gets a new tank also! We are picking up a 50 breeder.. that should do her for awhile :)

About this Entry
Sep. 24th, 2004 @ 08:44 pm the rainbow bridge....
My friends young beardie is not doing well..
for a few days it was hard to get him to eat more than a few crix a day. Then he pretty much all together stopped eatting.

My friend took him to the vet yesterday, but as he had not eatten there was no poop for a fecal. He weighs about 5 grams and probably about 2.5 - 3 months old. She was not sure if she could get the deworming medicine diluted enough to even give him, but she was able. She also gave him a hydration injection.

The vet sent them home, after showing my friend how to force feed Zak. 1 to 5 cc of chicken baby food.

After Brett gave Zak about 4-5 cc last night, Zak started to shake his head. Then would stop and a little later do it again. It is a new symptom. When the vet called today to follow up on Zak, she thinks that maybe 5cc is too much food and now they have cut it down to 1cc several times a day.

Zak is hanging in there, but definately not thriving at this point.

Keep him in your thoughts :)

Zak is the one on the rock (he is oogling a picture of Zoey (my beardie)

I hope he’s doing ok. Keep us posted. Are you sure about his weight or age though. My new little girl only looks about 8 weeks old, and she is very small (the size of my pointing finger approx.), but weighs about 25 grams. However, my scale could be very inaccurate and I’m not sure what is an average weight for that size, so I could be way off.
Did Zak start acting like this after the parasite meds? And if so, which was it? Perhaps Fenbendazole or Ivermectin? Either one of those meds can wipe out a BD for a few days (even up to a week), and then they can bounce right back. They’re hard on their systems, both equally so, but Ivermectin has been known to possibly be fatal to reptiles (although contraversial).

hiya Xena
about the weight yes.. 5g - the vet weighed him... and my friend has had Zak for 4 weeks... so I would guess he about the age I mentioned... he has not grown much in the 4 weeks.. and infact since he stopped eatting he has gotten pretty thin.

the vet simply said, at his weight and size its hard to dose him, take xrays or anything. She said that some of these lil guys are just not mention to thrive/survive. but she is doing everything she can, to help brett get Zak kicking :)

Brett would like to thank you for all the prayers and kind words...
but tonite about 6:45pm Zak crossed over the Rainbow Bridge..

We will both miss him greatly. He was a real fighter.. for almost a week now.. he ate very little, couldnt carry his own body weight, and rarely opened his eyes. He just wouldnt let go for some reason.

Earlier in the day Brett had adopted another bearded dragon relunctantly. Within a couple hours of the new beardie coming home, Zak took his last breath in Bretts hand.

I think Zak was waiting for Brett to bring another home. He wanted to be sure Brett wouldnt be alone.

Brett is in PA and Im in Michigan, but over the phone we will bury him tomorrow.

This is my favorite poem:

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Woohoo!

Its Friday!! Well for Zoey that means cage cleaning day :)  When I got home. I found poop as usual.. Ive come to know it will just be there from now on :)  I also found that she must have had a fun day, as she ate quite a bit of her salad, but the rest was tossed around the cage hehe

She was sitting on her basking rock when I came in, staring at the new desert background that wraps around the back and sides of her tank.

By the end of this month, we will be ordering the 65 gallon tank from http://glasscages.com

With her tank cleaned, I decided to bake her driftwood and put it back in the tank. She loved it so much last time. And I think its good for her to be able to get up close to the UVB/UVA lights.

Tank temps have been amazing good considering we still have the 10 gallon. I hope she can hold out til the end of the month for the bigger tank hehe

We have also decided to just go with repti carpet or indoor/outdoor carpet as substrate. Safer and actually pretty easy to clean. So the new challegne will begin when the big tank comes.. on how to heat, light and decorate it :) Anyway she is sleeping right now... good lil one she is .. she hits the hay no less than 5 minutes after the lights go out :)

Oh and btw.. Krystal at Petco thinks she might be a HE!! Well no matter :)

About this Entry
Sep. 17th, 2004 @ 11:45 pm Its been awhile...

Well its been awhile... and alot has happened....

Ill start at the beginning...

9.8.04
Mike and I took Zoey over to Petco. She still wasnt pooping and they said they would get a vet to see her if that is what she needed. She ate a normal dinner and some greens with apple juice. Krystal at Petco said Zoey looked very healthy. Good gum color, very alert, good size .. still I asked if they would have her checked out.
I had to sell her back to the store so they could take over ownership and have her seen by the vet. Sadly we did this. I typed out a 2 page letter entailing everything about Zoey over the past 12 days and gave it to Krystal.

9.9.04
I called Petco and Kystal said Zoey had gone to the bathroom! She was eatting well, and the vet simply wanted to monitor her for 3 days. I was a bit irritated that they had not even done a fecal on her, but not much I could do but sit and wait as I didnt own her anymore.

9.10.04
Called Petco after work and they said she was still doing well. Eatting like 12 crix and 10 mealies (which I asked them not to feed her *sigh*) and salad. We asked the lady (not Krystal) if we could come get her. The girl said yes. So I was doing the happy dance while getting ready. 10 minutes later the phone rings and the girl says we cant pick her up til the vet releases her *moans* She tells us the vet will see her Saturday. Ok well I only have to wait til the morning now.. Ill make it I think.
30 minutes later Petco calls back and says that the vet wont be in til Monday. Oh my God! This is really starting to piss me off. But again not much I can do.

9.11.04 and 9.12.04
crappy weekend.

9.13.04
Called Petco at lunch time and they said we could pick her up the vet thinks she is fine. So after work we rush over to the store, rebuy her back and head home. She looked great. And I think she grew! hehe

9.14.04
no poop but thats ok ... she ate about 20 crix and salad, and I figure its just stress of readjusting

9.15.04
we have poop... a bunch more crix and salad.. she is an eatting machine! I started bringing her back out of her cage, so she can get use to us again :)

9.16.04
again poop :))) still same great appetite. Another run around the room and hanging out on my arm

Saturday was pretty uneventful. Myself Im feeling a bit under the weather. Started yesterday... think maybe allergies.

Zoey was just content to hang out on her basking rock most of the day.

She had 5 crickets this morning. And a midday salad - made of endive, collard greens and a few little pieces of nectarine. She loved the salad but didnt go much for the fruit.

The place where I store my pictures is currently down, secondary to the hurricane in Florida.. but when its back online.. Ill add a few snaps to this post of her having salad.

Im totally out of crickets.. so tomorrow its back to Petco for more. Which will be good because they have the real tiny ones. Cant wait til the silkworms arrive :))

Anway Zoey is sleeping now, her head tucked under her rock, can only see the lower part of her body. Still no poop today, that makes it day 3. I might just have to take her to Petco with us tomorrow.. something about the car ride makes her go I think hehe

Ive been doing some research on alternative live food choices for Zoey, as I really HATE crickets.

What I came up with were silkworms. The are suppose to have more nutrients. The big plus however is they dont JUMP! and make noise!

Im all for that.. seems like a win win situation. The place I bought them from is called : http://www.mulberryfarms.com/index.htm

Im getting 100 JUV for $11 plus a trial of food for em.

Ill yell when I get em.

Well tonite was clean up night for Zoey's house. She promised to pay me $20/hr ... but Ive yet to see any cash...

I mixed a solution of 1 part bleach to 9 parts water... and wiped down the inside of the cage with a washcloth. After that I rinsed it clean with water and towel dried it. While I was waiting for the odor to go away.. I hosed off her carpet and hung it to dry. I wiped off her basking rock and drift wood with the bleach/water solution.. rinsed them clean and tossed em in the over at 250 degrees for 30 minutes. The driftwood cooled pretty quickly.. Im still waiting on the rock to cool down.

After that her house was smelling pretty good.. so I warmed up some water (lukewarm) and Zoey took a little bath. She lasted about 3-4 minutes in the water. She still isnt crazy about taking a bath. (kids eh?) After her bath, of which she actually jumped out of... I dusted 5 crickets for her and she ate dinner.

The driftwood was cooled enough so in her house it went, the plant is back btw, but with a few less leaves so it isnt hard for her to get lost in em. Last time I had this plant in, she didnt want to bask she only wanted to hide in the plant.

I poured a bit of her dry food into the bowl and some endive. And I let her be to settle down for awhile. After about 10 minutes she ate the endive. Then back to her driftwood to rest.

Its been 2 days since our last poop... but Im hopeful. Tomorrow I figure Zoey will get a little banana (she hasnt had that before) and some fresh endive soaked in apple juice.

Oh yes! Tonite was the first time Daniel (Mike's 5 year old son) met Zoey. I pretty sure he likes her hehe

In medieval Europe, dragons were considered mostly evil and a generally bad omen. Christianity linked the dragon with Satan because of the dragon's snake-like appearance. However, to the Orient cultures the dragon was a symbol of wisdom and royalty. It was a benign animal and the fifth creature of the Chinese zodiac. It resided over the east and the sunrise. It was also said to bring rain and the springtime. The dragon is interesting because it combines all four elements: air, earth, fire, and water. It could fly, had the horns of a ox, breathed fire, and resided over the moon.

I came home from work to a disaster in Zoey's cage. It looked as if she had invited 10 of her closest friends over.

Before I left for work this morning...I feed her about 5 crickets, which she ate right up. I tore up about 10 small pieces of endive and put it in her food bowl, next to her pellets...

Well when I got home, most of the endive was gone. A few dried up pieces scattered here and there. But the pellets.. sheesh were tossed in every corner of her home.

Ive warned her... if she keeps behaving like this.. she will force me to put up a webcam .. liz-nanny of some sort :P

Sep. 1st, 2004 @ 11:18 pm We have POOP!
Current Mood: accomplished

Well I guess the title says it all! And a picture is worth a thousand words!

The Story behind the poop...

Mike and I had decided to take Zoey back to the pet store, because she still had not gone...So I rushed home from work, wrote the vet a letter, and packed Zoey up.

We dropped Joseph off to stay with his granddad for a bit... and Mike and I headed to the store.

When we got there.. I opened the box a bit to make sure she was ok .. and I was greeted with the above image! Boy I have never been so thrilled to see poop!

We headed back home after picking up Joseph. With Zoey back in her tank, I dropped in a few dusted crickets cuz she had not eatten yet today... she gobbled em down quick.. bout 5 of them. She then spent the evening... being happy from what I could tell. Running around, climbing on her driftwood. Looking out at us to see what we were doing.

I started to think... "she really doesnt use her basking area anymore" So I decided to test it.. with the temp gauge right on the rock, I realized the direct temp was 115-120!! Way too hot! No wonder... So I removed a layer of rock and re ran the test.. go the temp down to 100 at the hottest. Zoey decided to come over and check out the temp gauge sitting there. First she tasted it a few times.. Yuck! Then she decided to try and push it off her rock, with both arms.

I must say she gave me a few good photo ops tonite.

She is asleep as I write this. She is tucked up in the back corner, with her nose to the glass. Silly girl!

Anyway Im just thrilled that the day has come.. now if she keeps this up ... *crosses fingers*

I will say the markings on her belly have lightened dramatically.

Night all .. sleep tight :)

Aug. 28th, 2004 @ 07:25 pm Zoey loves crickets
Current Mood: busy
Good morning Zoey!

Its the beginning of her first full day in our home. This morning the temps were around 86-88 at the hottest. Mike and I decided to return the reflector dome lamp, because the clamp just didnt hold it close enough to the screened top, and it was too large to sit directly on top. I also decided to return the U.T.H..I had read so many things about lizzies getting burns from them.

Breakfast! Zoey quickly gobbled down about 8 or 9 crickets and had a bit of endive. Still no poop to be seen. Ill keep hoping!

Mike and myself had some landscaping to do. We worked in the yard for 3 hours, when we finished we cleaned up and headed back to the store to return those things and get some others.

A quick stop at Target I found a desklamp with a bendable arm I could position right over the top of her cage, however the lampshade was plastic not metal. I thought we'd give it a try.

Now onto Petco. Exchanging was easy. I picked up the fluorescent light strip and the Reptisun 5.0 bulb. A basking spot light. Some crickets and we were off.

We got home and put everything together. A few hours later the temps had gone up a bit but not nearly enough *sigh* and still no poop.

Zoey has been anything but sulky. She is running around, climbing, nibbling at the pellet food. We tolerates being held. I wouldnt say she loves it at this point.. yet

Tonight I bought my first bearded dragon. What an ordeal. I knew I wanted a female but that was about all I knew.

I had no equipment whatsoever. So my boyfriend Mike, myself and his son Joseph set forth a hurricane in the reptile section of Petco. A 10 gallon tank, a large dome clip lamp, repti-bark for substrate (its what he was living on there), water bowl, drift wood, strip light, fluorescent light, 75wt red light, an U.T.H, a few temp gauges and a few other small things I cant remember.

So the cart is loaded, I find the clerk and tell her I want a female beardie. Her response is "I cant tell which is male and which is female." Well can I order a female I ask. Her reply simply No. Well who can sex them I ask. We have a reptile specialist who can, want me to find out when she will be in next. Ummm well yeah.

Ugh! So while the cashier goes to find out, we start unloading the cart, disappointed. She comes back and says the lady will be in tomorrow. Mike and I said ok we will come back, by this point the cart is pretty much empty. The clerk says, well you might want to buy all that and have the tank set up. First good idea she had all night. :p So while we are loading back up. The clerk says.. hmm ok let me try and see if I can tell.

I told her I had seen pictures on the net, so I might be able to help. She grabs one, who instantly starts closing his eyes while she pets its head. She gently lifts the tail, and to both of us, looked like a female. No double bulge on either side.

Ok, Ill take her!

As she goes to put her in a box, I yelled, we'll need a dozen crickets too.

I sign the paperwork, take the lil lizzie and head up to pay. Well along with the cat food, $223.00 later... we are heading for the car.

On the way home, we tossed around names, I liked Anchovy (my most favorite word), Pepe Sanchez, and Zoey. hehe needless to say Zoey was the best choice.

Once we got home, I started quickly setting up the tank. In the store I didnt realize the bulb I picked up was a red night bulb.. but it had to do for the first night. The temps never got much above 86 that night. And the clamp light was too big to fit correctly on the top of the tank, with the strip light in place.

Alot of little mistakes....

To be continued....
